Conversations with my Hairdresser No. 1

I am having my hair cut at Dappa in Broad Street by a lovely young girl who will remain nameless.  She is tiny, sparrow-like and can’t be much more than twenty although she looks about fourteen.

She is determined to try and make conversation so asks me what I have been doing and what plans I have and so on, so I help her out by giving her a major update on all our activities – seeing as she is not reading this blog.  This time I gave her all the detail of our recent trip to Oxford and was just going on to rave about something else when I noticed a trailer for the new season of “Game of Thrones” on the TV near us.  I announced that it was one of my favorite shows to which she replied that although she didn’t watch it she knew one of the actors in it.  Well I had to know “Who, pray tell”?  “Oh, I think she plays Araya Stark”.  So she is friends with none other than Maisy Williams who lives in a flat just nearby.

So, moving on, I ventured that we had watched some of the “Bathalf” (the Bath Half Marathon) the day before, Sunday.  Oh, yes, she had watched it too along the Lower Bristol Road.  Actually her mum runs Marathons, lots of them, say she, but she had missed this one as she was scheduled to do a sky-dive.  It was a pity too as the jump had to be postponed for a week so she could have run after all.

So, I asked, don’t you run like your mum.  Oh no, I’m much too unhealthy says she with her perfect marathon runners physique, I only have to run a few paces and I’m out of breath.

Well, as you can imagine, I can hardly wait to have my hair cut again to hear more revelations from my hairdresser.

What a wonderful story! And, who was it who said ‘youth is wasted on the young’? Go the hairdresser’s mother! That’s the way – 50 (?) going on 18?!
